NIELS SWINKELS is a freelance journalist, musicologist, sound engineer and radio producer. Born and raised in The Netherlands, he studied English Language & Literature, and Musicology at the University of Nijmegen.
Before moving to San Francisco in 1995, he was the Arts Editor, and Senior Classical Music & Opera critic for Brabants Dagblad, a regional daily newspaper in the South of The Netherlands.
His articles were nationally syndicated through the (then) United Dutch Newspapers (VNU) Group. Among them interviews with conductors Valery Gergiev, Bernard Haitink and Jeffrey Tate, opera director Peter Sellars, and Dutch composers Peter Schat and Tristan Keuris.
As a journalist and musicologist, he provides reviews and other content for the San Francisco Classical Voice, the San Francisco Opera, Elevation Online, and others.
Swinkels is producer for Open Air with host David Latulippe, a weekly radio magazine about the performing arts in the Bay Area. Open Air is broadcast live on Thursday afternoon 1-2pm on for KALW Local Public Radio in San Francisco.
He is also THE Wine Guy at Trader JoeÕs Nob Hill in San Francisco.
